A Team
Weekly update #332 5/31/2026 to 6/6/2026
Some weeks are busier than others, and for a week with a lighter calendar, it sure was busy. Let me tell you about that and more as I share some of my week serving as mayor of the best small town in America.
A few months ago, I shared that the Mayor’s Youth Council wrapped up for the 25/26 school year and registration would open soon for the 26/27 school year. Here we are, and in just over a week registration will close and we will begin the process of reviewing applications and scheduling interviews. A few years ago, one of our youth council members asked if we could do interviews so that the first interview members experienced may not be for a job. This gives members a chance to have the butterflies in their stomach, so hopefully, this allows them to have fewer butterflies next time they have an interview. I don’t know about the rest of you but the more I do something the less stress I have towards it. Taking a quick glance at current applicants, I can tell you we have some previous members along with some new faces applying. If you are an incoming freshman through senior and will be at Seymour High School, Trinity Lutheran, Sandy Creek, or home schooled, I hope to see your name added to the list as we start to review applications on the 16th. I hope you had a chance to attend Friday Night Live at Southern Indiana Center for the Arts. If not, I believe the next event is this coming Friday at 6 p.m., and I am sure it will be a fun time like always. This past week though, it was an acoustic session with Forrest Turner breaking out some classic hits, some deep cuts, and some Forrest Turner originals. I am not sure how long JCBank has been sponsoring Friday Night Live, but I appreciate them helping give an entertainment option here in our community. See you on the 12th for the next Friday Night Live at SICA.
Thank you to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #655 for the recent donation to the Seymour Parks Foundation. The Seymour Parks Foundation was established about five years ago to allow Seymour Parks and Recreation to have a place for donated funds that they want to grow to use for larger projects down the road. One of my dreams is to grow the foundation to a point that the annual fireworks are paid for from the interest, and we could at that point not have to stress if we will have a corporate sponsor step up each year and we won’t have to keep it in the annual budget funded via tax dollars. This can’t happen without donations like the one from the Eagles, individuals, and corporate donors as well. If you are interested in helping with this or other areas via the Seymour Parks Foundation, reach out to Park Director Chad Keithley for more information.
Well, that wraps up a quick glance into my world serving as mayor. Throw in several update meetings on various projects around the community and speaking to area youth and you have a full calendar for what seemed like a light week when it started. As I sat down to those meetings, it was often different members of the team that joined me. As each tackled their part of the project it reminded me it takes a team, and we have a team that wants to see Seymour succeed. A team that wants to see Seymour residents prosper. A team that is here for something bigger than themselves. Today, I will leave you with a quote from Coach Phil Jackson, "The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team."
