Busy Week
Weekly update #343 8/16/2026 to 8/22/2026
What a week of events to choose from! This week, I will highlight just a few of them over the next few paragraphs as I share some of my week serving as mayor of the best small town in America.
Jackson County United Way held their Leadership Breakfast this week. During the event they celebrated several award winners along with the top ten campaigns. One topic they hit on was the recent community conversations results with an information packet at each seat. We heard a first-hand testimonial from a client of a JCUW partner agency. Then learned of one of the new programs; the Community Resource Bus will hit the roads in the near future to help take events like Rock and Ready and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program all across Jackson County. They also have an upcoming Poverty Simulation; if you are interested in participating or have done it before and want to volunteer, that will be on October 30th this year. This week, I had a couple chances to interact with Seymour Main Street. The first was our monthly check in where we discuss what is going on in the downtown area. Potential new businesses talking about coming to town and upcoming events are always a part of the chat. As far as businesses go, that is on the company to announce before we start to share. City Jam was one of the events though; this past Thursday, The Woodshop Boys played everything from Tom Petty to Beastie Boys. If you missed it you missed a good time at Crossroads Park. Don’t worry though, you have one more chance for City Jam on September 17th, or like it has been all summer the third Thursday of the month. The Downtown Shop Around event was a good chance to visit a store you may not know is downtown and visit your favorites while entering to win. Last, but definitely not least, is all the events around Scoop the Loop. Friday night, things kicked off with the 11th Annual FOP Pre Scoop Tom Gray Memorial Car Show. This year, they had 228 entries to kick off the weekend. It is a great way to catch up with old friends and make new ones if you are into cars. Shout out to the Seymour Area Cruisers for all the work they do to help get cars parked as they arrive and then judging. Thank you to everyone from Donald M. Winn Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 108 for all your involvement with registration and prizes. The last item this week was Scoop the Loop which throws back to our younger years where people come out to make laps around downtown. It always interests me the variations of what the loop is from the different eras. Some used Chestnut as the main north and south crossing Highway 50 looping at each end. Others, like my era, used Chestnut, Walnut, and Highway 50 as part of our loop. Regardless of what you did in your younger years or yesterday, I hope everyone had a good time. Today, I won’t leave you with a quote, but instead a thought about scooping because it was the same loop (give or take), but we all have different memories.
